Overview

This case study examines the end-to-end process of installing and maintaining a comprehensive suite of security systems—including closed-circuit television (CCTV), intruder alarms, access control, gates and barriers, and fire alarm systems. Situation

Our client, a global logistics company, required an upgraded security solution to address increased risks of unauthorised access, theft, and fire hazards. The site included administrative offices, warehouses, and restricted zones, each presenting unique security and safety challenges. A thorough assessment was conducted to evaluate physical vulnerabilities, operational requirements, and compliance with British and European safety standards. System selection focused on reliability, scalability, and ease of integration.

  • CCTV: High-definition IP cameras with night vision and remote monitoring capabilities.
  • Intruder Alarms: Zonal detection with dual technology sensors to reduce false alarms.
  • Access Control: Card and biometric readers for sensitive areas, with centralised management software.
  • Gates and Barriers: Automated barriers with vehicle recognition for car parks and controlled entry points.
  • Fire Alarm Systems: Addressable panels with multi-sensor detectors and voice evacuation features.
  • Selections were made in consultation with manufacturers and in accordance with EN 50131 (intruder alarms) and BS 5839 (fire alarms) standards.

Solution

CCTV Systems
The installation began with the strategic placement of cameras to cover all critical zones. Cables were routed through existing conduits to minimise disruption. Network video recorders (NVRs) were set up in a secure server room, and the system was configured for remote access by authorised personnel. Integration with the access control system enabled event-based recording, enhancing incident response.  

Intruder Alarms
Sensors were installed at all perimeter doors and windows. Control panels were positioned near main entrances for ease of arming and disarming. The system was linked to the facility’s management platform, enabling real-time alerts and remote diagnostics.

Access Control Systems
Card readers were installed at all staff entrances, with biometric readers deployed for sensitive zones. The installation included the creation of a central database to manage user credentials and access levels. Integration with CCTV allowed for real-time video verification of access events.

Gates and Barriers
Automated barriers were fitted at vehicle entry points, with induction loops installed for accurate vehicle detection. The system was networked to the access control platform, ensuring that only authorised vehicles could enter. Safety features such as emergency manual override and obstacle detection sensors were tested for compliance.

Fire Alarm Systems
Addressable fire detectors were installed in accordance with a detailed site plan, ensuring coverage of high-risk areas. The main fire panel was located in the security office, with remote annunciators placed at key exits. The system was programmed for phased evacuation, prioritising high-occupancy zones.
